Cision cons: What users complain about most

However, several recurring issues have been noted by users:

User interface challenges

Many users report that Cision’s dashboard and navigation feel cluttered or outdated, making it difficult to complete tasks quickly or intuitively – especially for new users.

Data accuracy concerns

Users frequently mention that contact details in the media database are outdated, incorrect, or missing entirely, leading to wasted outreach efforts and lower response rates.

Also, as I'm sure you've already noticed, Cision's database of contacts seems to be heavily inflated. It takes me hours to put together an accurate, reliable media list because Cision's info is notoriously bad. Half the contacts have moved outlets or straight up aren't working anymore, and the other half have different emails than the ones provided.

Customer support issues

Several reviewers highlight poor customer service, including slow response times, lack of follow-through on issues, and limited support during onboarding or troubleshooting.

I would email our Cision rep and it would take them 2+ weeks to respond and require I follow up. They could never give me a straight answer abot inaccurate information. Our relationship with them really fizzled the last few years once they realized we were on a 2 year auto renew.

Unclear pricing that piles up

Reviews mention that the cost of Cision can easily stack up as there isn't a flat price structure for services.

Cost vs value

Cision’s pricing is considered steep by many, with users questioning whether the features justify the cost, especially given challenges with data accuracy and usability. Many users say they started with high expectations, only to feel the money spent didn’t reflect the value they received.

Several companies say the cost of the service is hard to justify, especially when compared to the work involved in navigating the tool or the questions left unanswered by customer support.

Mass pitching risks

Some PR professionals express concern that relying on Cision’s bulk distribution features encourages impersonal, untargeted pitching, which can damage relationships with journalists and reduce outreach effectiveness.

Is Cision worth it? What user reviews say about pricing

Cision's pricing structure is not publicly disclosed, leading to varied experiences among people that use its services. Some report paying upwards of $13,000 annually for features like media monitoring and social listening.

Reviews that mention pricing in a positive light tend to focus on Cision's newswire services, such as PRWeb:

Reviews also raise some red flags around pricing-related customer service and unexpected billing issues:

For large organizations with extensive PR needs, Cision may offer value through its comprehensive toolset. However, smaller companies or those seeking more personalized outreach strategies might find the platform's offerings excessive or misaligned with their objectives.

Wire services and media lists: Do they work?

Cision's press release distribution and media database services are central to its platform. While these tools can amplify reach, they also come with challenges:

  • Impersonal outreach: Sending press releases or pitches to large, untargeted lists can come across as generic or irrelevant, which many journalists find off-putting and easy to ignore.
  • Engagement rates: Mass outreach strategies often yield low open and response rates, as journalists are less likely to engage with content that isn’t clearly tailored to their beat or interests.
  • Data staleness: Without regular updates, media databases can include outdated job titles, incorrect emails, or former contacts, making outreach efforts inefficient and reducing the likelihood of coverage.

Alternatives emphasize targeted pitching, building genuine relationships with media contacts, and segmenting outreach to align with specific interests and beats.
