Improved rankings for custom press room domains

In the past, many of our press rooms using a custom domain have encountered issues with multiple versions of the same content on different URLS. For example Proximity/BBDO is using a custom press room domain press.proximity.bbdo.be, at the same time Prezly still hosts the “normal” press room url (proximity-bbdo.prezly.com). This creates two problems:

  1. Search engines don’t know which version to rank (trust, authority, link juice,…) for query results. It just keeps it separated between both of your press rooms
  2. The same content is available on two different locations, making it hard to give credit (rank) the “real” owner

When all of this happens, our customers suffer ranking and traffic losses, ultimately resulting in decreased visibility of your press release. Based on findings while monitoring the effectiveness of your Prezly press release in the search engines (read: google) we have decided to come up with a solution for that.

From now on all press rooms that use a custom domain are only available on the primary press room url. We will make sure all distribution of your release using prezly contains that same link. To make sure all “old” (already indexed) PR’s remain active we will redirect traffic to the corresponding pages (using a 301 redirect).

We hear you. Two (minor) additions to press rooms

By popular request we decided to bump up two change requests in Prezly’s roadmap.

Press Room Visibility

From now one you can set the Press Room visibility allowing you to set-up a “non-indexable” press room that will not be indexed by search engines such as Bing. And the other ones :p

Visit your press room settings > google analytics and visibility page to update the changes.

Please note that multi-room accounts can individually change this setting on a per-pressroom basis without having impact on your other press rooms.

Sitemap

Whenever we roll-out new Prezly features we always keep Search Engine Friendlyness in account. We do this to make sure that all your press rooms and releases reach maximum visibility making use of industry-standard SEO best-practices and techniques.

As of today we will automatically generate a sitemap.xml in every sitemap to make sure that Google, Bing and others can crawl and index your press release archive.

We’re using our ‘not found’ pages to help find missing children

Our client advertising agency Famous created an initiative that makes it possible to turn the ‘not found pages’ on sites into missing children messages. Via Notfound.org we joined the 1490 websites that help find missing children with their error pages. Read more about the beautiful initiative on the press release of Famous.

Be more productive with our revamped content management system

Power users spend an average of 15 hours per month using Prezly to connect to their contacts. That’s two full days of clicking around in our tool. Two full days of doing tasks that they probably rather wouldn’t do. To ease that pain we’ve been spending a lot of time with users to make the interface more efficient and pleasant. One of the first results that we’re launching is a better looking and more usable content management interface.

Better use of your screen space

One size no longer fits all. If you have a big screen you can see more content at once. Excellent if your are managing multiple press rooms for multiple clients.

A fresher look and feel

We made it big and bright and ditched the beige. These aren’t the seventies anymore. The content management system uses the fresh colors of the rest of the site and the typography is more expressive too.

Improved contact management

Now you can a save a lot more info about your contacts: language, address, telephone,.. And we’re just getting started here.

I’m excited about this release. Some initial feedback was that people feel that their task is more enjoyable. We hope that will be the case for you to. Enjoy!

Reach a bigger audience with our new press releases optimized for any device

13% of the traffic on our press rooms is coming from mobile devices. These people only stay on the page for 21 seconds, compared to the 2 minutes 2 seconds on computers. This means that a lot of users aren’t seeing your content in good conditions. These numbers have been a thorns in our eyes for a while now, so we decided to completely redesign the press rooms. The new solution shows your content pixel perfect on most devices. For the coming month you can try this new version and give us feedback. Here is an example of a press release of our client Boondoggle.

Adapting the layout to different screens is one improvement. Based on user feedback we also made these changes:

  • Boilerplate: from now on you’ll see a typical press release boilerplate on all your press releases. It’s the same about text that is displayed on the press room.
  • Social media links: to invite people to further connect with you, now you can add links to your Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook presences on your press room.
  • Search engine optimization: the content gets picked up even better by search engines.

Proposing this change has gathered a lot of positive and negative feedback. Most people are exited about the changes while some prefer the current solution. Listening to the feedback we’re trying to find a good balance between innovation and familiarity. As always we love to hear feedback.
